CellOxess Welcomes Professor Donald Evenson to Board of Directors
9th July, 2015; Princeton, NJ--CellOxess is excited to announce that innovator and fellow entrepreneur Dr. Don Evenson has joined our Board of Directors. As President and Director of SCSA Diagnostics, Dr. Evenson has been a pioneer in the field of sperm DNA testing and has over 25 years of experience in human and animal sperm DNA testing. He developed and commercialized the Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay, or SCSA test, which was the first sperm DNA integrity test to be widely available to patients who are trying to conceive.
Dr. Evenson received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in Cell Biology, and received an appointment at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Research Institute at Cornell University before completing a post-doctoral position at Florida State University’s Institute of Molecular Biophysics. In 1986, Dr. Evenson founded SCSA Diagnostics, revolutionizing the field of DNA damage testing by commercializing a test for sperm DNA integrity, which is still widely used by fertility clinics around the world. This assay uses flow cytometry to measure DNA fragmentation, or the incidence of double strand breaks in the DNA in sperm cells, which is reported as a DNA Fragmentation Index, or %DFI. This test has been instrumental in providing clinics around the world with access to DNA integrity testing, as it does not have to be done on-site with a standard semen analysis. Headquartered in South Dakota, SCSA Diagnostics also has affiliated testing centers in Brazil, France, England, Sweden, the Czech Republic, India, and Australia. Dr. Evenson has become an advocate for sperm DNA testing in all couples struggling with fertility, insisting that even with a normal semen analysis, sperm DNA may be compromised.
Dr. Evenson has served as an adjunct professor at both Oregon State University and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Sanford Medical School at the University of South Dakota. He is active in several international professional societies, including the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the American Association of Bioanalysts, the American Society of Andrology, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, Sigma Xi, and the Environmental Mutagen Society. In addition to the development of DNA integrity diagnostics, Dr. Evenson’s research has included establishing links between age, environmental exposure, sperm DNA integrity, and reproductive risk. He has also dedicated much of his work to generating evidence that DNA damage is associated with poor outcomes after the use of Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART).
Since the inception of SCSA Diagnostics, Don has received multiple awards for research excellence, including the Sigma Xi Award for Research Excellence and the F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Research, and has published over one hundred peer-reviewed articles during the course of his career. In addition, he has received both a patent on flow cytometry techniques and extensive federal R01 funding for his research in the field of sperm DNA integrity.
We welcome Dr. Evenson to the CellOxess team, and look forward to working with him on our mission to provide couples with an optimum path towards a achieving a healthy pregnancy and offspring.
